On Monday night, fans that trekked out to the Steiner Ice Arena were treated to history in the making: the first official curling matches to ever happen under the Deaflympics banner. Three games were played: the Canadian Men versus the Chinese, the Swiss Men’s team versus the Finnish team, and the Canadian women versus the Croatian team.
Against a backdrop of confused fans asking numerous questions about the game and its scoring system, the Switzerland men’s team defeated Finland handily 14–4. While the Canadians proved themselves worthy of their country’s mythical title of “Land of the Curlers” as the Canadian men’s team crushed China 15–4, and the Canadian women annihilated the Croatian women’s team 23–1.
